McDonald’s

2400 North Cedar Street, Holt, Michigan

Status: Demolished in 2010

Opened: 1976

Architect(s): McDonald’s Corporation

The original mansard-roof Holt McDonald’s was built and opened in 1976 at the corner of Cedar Street and Delhi Commerce Drive. This building was of the standard McDonald’s architecture of the period. The McDonald’s architecture of the 1950s and 1960s, in “Googie” design with the golden arches built into the structure, were phased out beginning around 1970.

The McDonald’s Corporation designed the second generation architecture in house. Local zoning boards across the nation were tired of the “Googie” designs, even Ray Croc’s modification on that design with an enclosed vestibule received pushback. So corporate designed a brick-faced building with mansard-style roof and indoor seating. The Holt McDonald’s was later modified from its original dark mansard-style roof, when the whole building was painted, including the red roof and white and gray bricks.

This old building was demolished in 2010 and the new building built to the north in the new corporate architectural style. The building and parking lot traded places during this renovation, but remained on the same parcel. The large old golden arches were retained and still stand at the corner of Delhi Commerce Drive.
